Face
and Fiction
I
The self-portrait is interpolated
The body that appears in the image is not Schuster’s body.
It is computed from Schuster — a statistical approximation
that is neither staging nor disguise. Schuster provides
training data, the machine interpolates.
II
Every image comes with a birth certificate
Work ID, model name, seed, steps, guidance, CFG scale, LoRA,
SHA-256 hash, prompt and negative prompt. The image is not an
autonomous work but a quoted computational operation whose
input variables are exhaustively documented.
III
The machine is named
stable-diffusion.cpp. krea2_turbo-Q4_K_M.gguf.
Qwen3-VL-4B-Instruct. Wan2_1_VAE_bf16. skreaneuer.safetensors.
There is no longer an artist myth. There is only an operator
who sets parameters.
IV
Some selfies are glossy
Not all images refuse glamour. Some AI selfies are high-gloss:
the aristocrat in a baroque white robe, the cowboy in the
sunlight of the American West, the sci-fi warrior with
emerald goggles. Schuster courts the gloss and at the same
time undercuts it — through the provenance block that
exposes every pose as a computational operation.
V
The Antiquities Hall is disturbed
AI bodies hung between Roman marble busts and Greek vases.
Cowboy aesthetics meets Winckelmann. The marble body was
never allowed to be construction. Schuster’s bodies can be
construction because they were born as construction.
VI
Identity is a cloud
Whoever has once learned that the self is not a fixed fortress
but a cloud of possible states has no difficulty generating
themselves as a cowboy or as an aristocrat. The diagnosis is
the prehistory of interpolation.
VII
Art is a strategy of survival
»Strategy for survival and self-assertion.« Art is not therapy.
It is the competence to choose parameters. Artistic authorship
is what it can still be in an algorithmic epoch.
VIII
Ludwigshafen remains the ground
Working-class child, Catholicism, BASF steam, Walzmühle,
demolition 1993. The industrial hometown is the substrate
from which the algorithmic practice draws its sobriety.
Whoever knows the margins has no interest in images that
pretend to be naturally given.
