Where are you living?

Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg/Pankow

How old you are? (if you don’t mind answering)

48

What inspires you?

Good painting as a painter, good music as a musician. Where “good” means that within the respective structure, I can recognize a consciousness of the means and history of the medium and a will to overcome that state of consciousness.

Tell me about what you do?

I work as a painter and as a musician. Both as “workers” in the above sense.

What’s the structure of a typical day like for you?

As an artist, I take the liberty of not having a regular day (that’s why I’m an artist in a subversive sense), as a human being I have to plan the day very well: getting up, doing human things, then being an artist, having the work to do.

What are some of your favourite sources for information?

Everything that my brain can grasp, be it digital or analog.

How does social media influence your life?

It is a gratification of vanity (which is an inherent part of my vocation), unfortunately only for a few moments.

Awake safe, doing art, listen to music all day long, drink wine with a nice and smart girl and… stay alive.

What are some of your favourite sources for information?

Books, web, TV.

How does social media influence your life?
Sometimes they influence my body, but never my life.

Interview Adeline Spengler, Artist, Paris

https://www.instagram.com/adeline_spengler/

Where are you living?
I live in Paris

How old you are?
I’m 46

What inspires you?
My prime inspiration source is nature. I love its beauty. My pictures are made outdoors in natural environment. I’m also inspired by photographers such as Sarah Moon, Francesca Woodman, Saul Leiter, Ernst Haas and Masao Yamamoto. My mixed media paintings aim to evoke oceans, wind, earth and fire. My favourite painters are Gerhard Richter, Kandinsky, Chagall, Jackson Pollock.

Tell me about what you do?
I’m a photographer and a painter.

What’s the structure of a typical day like for you?
I’m used to stay up late because I love working at night. I’ve recently left my art director job so I can work full time on my artwork. I like to challenge myself so I try to do a painting a day. I also do photographic work. I’m currently setting up a trip on a very small island in French Brittany. Traveling is a way for me to gather inspiration and come up with new ideas. I also spend a lot of time in art shows so I can keep entertained. Paris is a great place for art.

What are some of your favourite sources for information?
I use the internet quite a lot. It’s a great way to follow artists and understanding what’s happening in the art world. I also read a lot of french photo’s magazines such as Fisheye magazine, Polka magazine, 6 mois.

How does social media influence your life?
I use social media to keep in touch with my friends. Facebook & Instagram are also great places to interact and connect with other artists.

Interview Ira Konyukhova, Artist, Moscow

Where are you living?
Right now I live in Moscow, although Iʼm moving to Braunschweig at the end of
January 2018.
How old are you? (if you donʼt mind answering)
33
What inspires you?
Usually something we try very hard not to notice it.
Tell me about what you do?
Video/Installations/Sculpture/Writing
and even photography
Whatʼs the structure of a typical day like for you?
I usually get up at 10 am – sometimes earlier, sometimes later, I try my best
anyway.
Then I have breakfast until 11.30. I know itʼs long, but I need this time to prepare
myself mentally for the day.
Then Iʼm usually working, writing script or review of the exhibition, or the
applications. Or Iʼm doing research, working on the projects regarding
conceptualizing, visualizing, or cutting the film out of shot material.
Itʼs usually very vague, even for me.
Then Iʼm going to the openings if there are any, or for a walk for an hour, or I’m
reading something Marxist.
End.
What are some of your favourite sources of information?
Marxist books, exhibitions and exhibitions catalogs, Facebook, Russia Today
and Tagesschau.
How does social media influence your life?
Immensely. Whatever time I get up, the first thing I do is to check my Facebook.
Usually not because I’m expecting something interesting happening there, but
because staring at the screen emanating white light is the best way to
understand that you’re not dreaming anymore.

Interview Sabina McGrew , Photographer, Los Angeles

Where are you living?

Los Angeles

How old are you? if you don’t mind answering)

I’m in my 40’s.

What inspires you?

My daughter Faye, the desert, Jodowrowski movies and  L.A. weirdness

Tell me about what you do?

I’m a photographer, educator,  and-  as of lately, also a film maker

What’s the structure of a typical day like for you?

I get up 6.00 am and get my kid ready for school, check emails , organize jobs, work on ideas for photo /film projects.  When my schedule allows it I either go thrifting – I have been finding the most incredible vintage furniture and props – or I go hiking or to the beach. Since I spend a fair amount of time in the car driving , I listen to a lot of music,  and then there’s all these mundane mom duties like cooking, organizing etc.. By the time I read nighttime stories to my kid I’m pretty wiped out

What are some of your favourite sources of information?

At this point I rely heavily on the internet, ( I skim through NYTimes, the Guardian, BBC Spiegel online etc.. Teen Vogue does some great reporting these days ) even though my old school self really  loves reading actual newspapers –Normally I just don’t have the time unless I’m on a plane.

How has social media influenced your life?

I love it and I hate it. On one level Facebook helps me stay connected with my friends abroad and there’s all kinds of entertaining art world gossip but it is such a time sucker! After Trump got elected facebook became this rather dark vortex of information. Instagram is much more visual so there’s less to digest, but it can be also redundant and rather exhausting.  A while ago after some rain we had double and even triple rainbows in Los Angeles , and virtually, seconds later these images were all over FB and Instagram-  My feed was full of them.. I was like: Please no more triple rainbows!!! I simply couldn’t take it anymore.

Where are you living?

I live in Berlin and on the countryside in Brandenburg.

How old you are? (if you don’t mind answering)

Unfortunately, I will soon turn 50 – incredible.

What inspires you?

Inspiring me: my next surrounding environment, movements, attitudes, light, shadow, compositions, city, country, flora, fauna, sea, mountains, travel, reading, pinterest, facebook, as you can see but also the Jugendstil, The Modern, the 50s, 60s. In short: to look, to be curious, then I find everything I need!

Tell me about what you do?

What I do? Drink lots of coffee, some sport, not like other, but regular. Regularly meet friends, take short trips, work a lot in the garden, with the aim of creating a lush, colorful flower garden (and to maintain and maintain it), as a hobby potter (which in the end looks better than it sounds, I thing), Of course, draw a whole lot, draw, draw.

What’s the structure of a typical day like for you?

A typical day: do not get up too late (but not too early) as I said: Coffee drink, black, without milk and sugar. Usually a little tidying up, because it must look quite right around me when I work. Then work without artist attitudes at the desk. mostly until the late afternoon. Then I make a real evening of work. Time for family and friends or hobby and garden, that is important to me.

What are some of your favourite sources for information?

Source: mostly Google, little Wikipedia, and what I like analogously

How does social media influence your life?

Social media: I’m trying to pull myself out a little, especially out of fb, It robs me of too much time and meaning. But continue to use it as a professional platform. Otherwise I hardly use social media, rather analog!
